Aultman Serenity Program

Anyone - at any time or anywhere can be impacted by violence. The Aultman Serenity program is here to help you or someone you love if they have been a victim of assault.

The Serenity program ensures patients receive prompt treatment by nurses who have received specialized forensic training and to care for individuals impacted by sexual violence. This means better care for survivors in a confidential environment that is safe and compassionate.

Specially Trained Nurses

Aultman Alliance Community Hospital has specially trained nurses specialized in sexual assault forensic exams for survivors of sexual assault. Serenity nurses have received 40 hours of training in caring for patients after assault both physically and emotionally. Their education includes sexual assault forensic evidence collection, photo documentation, simulation training and collaboration with community partners.

If you have been assaulted, consider the following:

  • Get to a safe place.
  • Know you have options.
  • Reach out to someone you trust.
  • Seek medical treatment at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital Emergency Department.
  • If you have been sexually assaulted, avoid changing your clothes, bathing or brushing your teeth.

What to expect at the time of your examination:

  • You will be transferred to a private room as soon as possible.
  • You will receive a medical assessment and treatment of any physical injuries by an AACH Emergency Department physician.
  • Staff will speak with you about your options and Serenity program services.
  • A Serenity program nurse may perform any of the following services based on your needs and consent: medical forensic exam and evidence collection - which may include clothing, blood and urine.
  • Medications may be offered based on your needs and consent to receive them. These medications are for sexually transmitted infection prevention, pregnancy prevention and HIV. Your nurse will discuss these options in detail at time of exam.
  • Information will be provided regarding follow-up care and options, community social service providers that are available and your rights as a victim of crime and assistance with the Victims of Crime Compensation Application.
